Update: SRBemerging critics fellowships

CA-SRB Emerging Critics 2019

We’re thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2019 CA-SRB Emerging Critics Fellowships:

Madeleine Gray (NSW)

Eloise Grills (VIC)

Melissa Thorne (QLD)

The CA-SRB Emerging Critics Fellowships were established in 2016 to foster new Australian critical voices. New work by Madeleine, Eloise and Melissa will start to appear on the SRB in the second half of the year. Their focus will be on new works of Australian literature and we anticipate that their essays will invigorate our program for 2019.  In addition, five writers were short-listed for the fellowships by the judges. They were:

Justine Hyde

Barnaby Smith

Christine Sun

Anna Thwaites

Karen Wylde

We received a tremendous volume of applications for the fellowships this year. It was an extremely high quality cohort of applications that proposed critical explorations of Australian literature in all of its forms. On the evidence of these applications, there is no risk of emerging groupthink in our critical culture. This year the judging panel for the fellowships was comprised of philosopher and essayist Chris Fleming and novelist Felicity Castagna. We’re grateful to them for the time, energy and ethos they brought to the judging process.
