Elleke Boehmer

Born in Durban, South Africa, Elleke Boehmer is an acclaimed writer and a leading scholar in postcolonial and empire studies. She is currently Professor of World Literature in English at Oxford University. Her recent work, both fictional and critical, has formed part of a significant shift towards engaging with south-south connections and the Indian Ocean cultural arena, and teases out their entanglements with empire and other global webs. Her two latest books, the cultural history Indian Arrivals, 1870-1915: Networks of British Empire (Oxford UP, 2015) and the novel The Shouting in the Dark (Jacana; Sandstone, 2015), continue to trace these textual threads in new ways. Indian Arrivals won the 2015 ESSE Prize for Literatures in English, and The Shouting in the Dark was longlisted for the (South African) Sunday Times Barry Ronge Prize.
