Centre of the Centre

Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - C

A notebook with writing, an empty paper bag, and a sauce container on a table at the Parramatta Westfield food court, with blurred people and stalls in the background.

Do I write about Westfield?

I am definitely writing about Westfield.

To leave off Westfield is dishonesty.

What is the appeal of the Westfield in Parramatta?

May Ngo writes about shopping centres in ‘Shopping Night’. When I enter the Westfield, I feel like I’m inhabiting Ngo’s essay.

What is the appeal of a food court?

Variety and speed and averageness. It is also low-key.

A nightmare would be forgetting where I parked my car. A headache would be needing something on level 1 while being up on level 5.

A character in Ask the Dust by John Fanté solves his problems by turning off the lights and going to sleep.

I solve my problems by saying never mind and going home without whatever I need.

It is a sensory experience to be in the centre.

Whatever silence is, the opposite is found here.

To my far left is the pharmacy.

 To my right is JB.

 The centre is a centre.

Love it or hate it, the centre is right here.
