It is taught religiously as the crucial part of any story.

Without conflict there is no story but as Ursula Le Guin says, it is diminishing to reduce all of human experience to conflict.

Just as an exercise, it is worth considering what the parameters of story, the possibilities, are if the centre is something other than conflict.
