Palm Tree Evocative

Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - P

Black and white photograph of Plaza Independencia in Montevideo. In front, there is a walking path, a grass area with a statue, and palm trees of varying heights.

On the cover of The Theory of Everything, there are the palm trees from Plaza Independencia in Montevideo.

It is an iconic square with thirty-three palm trees, invoking the number important to the Freemasons.

I associate late afternoon with Uruguay: with silver, with beautiful lighting, with the shadows creeping across the day.

I connect the palm trees in Parramatta Square with their Uruguayan equivalents across the Pacific.

Whenever it is close to sunset, stand in the square and look to PHIVE and then beyond in the direction west.
