Pemulwuy

Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - P

The first time I came across Pemulwuy was in the naming of a new park close to where we lived.

On the sign was a line that said Pemulwuy was a prominent Aboriginal warrior in the area.

The second instance was the naming of the new suburb just past Greystanes.

Pemulwuy was not an established suburb as I was growing up but I used to visit a friend who lived there in the first decade of the 2000s.

Writing this, I struggle to think of statues of prominent people in the area. There is a small statue of a boy in Parramatta Square.

Could it be that I don’t notice the statues or that there aren’t so many?

My sense is there may be one outside the stadium of someone who used to play for the Parramatta Eels.

Perhaps I go for a statue and plaque walk.

The truth is I love sculpture but I don’t care for statues so much. Historically they have been built for a particular type of person who is idolised over people who work in their communities without notice and thanks.
