Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - P

It was a deliberate choice to teach in public schools after going to such schools myself.

 As an interesting exercise, it is useful to consider the grounds of Kings School versus the nearby Cumberland High.

 One is lavish and the other is pressed tightly into place.

 There, in those two schools, is the stark contrast between public and private, and what it means for the future of students.

 There is a particular philosophy that will shower money on public education, to not leave excursions, uniforms or the proper funding of schools to the limitations of the parents’ purse.

 What the pandemic taught is that more students than anticipated did not have adequate access to technology at home, that the social reality of students may not be as good as the surface presents.

 One function of schools is to provide an education.

 The other is to ensure that possibility and opportunity do not become entrenched along the lines of parental wealth and class.
