Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - S

Pretty much every afternoon in my high school years, I used to watch The Bold and the Beautiful with my dad.

I remember ridiculous story lines and intense glances that carried over from one episode to the next.

There was Brooke, Taylor, Thorne, Ridge, Sally, Stephanie, and then Sheila, who was unhinged.

I once listened to an interview with the actor who played Ridge in the 90s and he was asked how long a viewer could keep away from the show and still be able to pick up the storyline.

 His answer was ten years.

Today, after a period of twenty years, I watch an episode of this soap.

Brooke is still there in what is either a satin dressing gown or a dress.

Ridge is played by another actor.

Sheila is referenced but doesn’t appear on screen.

Watching the show again is a delicious pleasure. It is amusing, dramatic and completely inconsequential, exactly as it was many years ago.
