Hannah McCann is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne. Her work sits within the field of Critical Femininity Studies, with a focus on sexuality, identity and gender expression. She is the author of Queering Femininity: Sexuality, Feminism and the Politics of Presentation, and co-author of Queer Theory Now: From Foundations to Futures.

For me birth was illustrative of how becoming parents pegs you to a whole new set of heterosexual gender expectations: there I was, the new mother, left alone to cope through pain and fear; my partner, the father, sent to another room with no information; us now understood to be husband and wife.
