Rob Nixon
Rob Nixon holds the Barron Family Professorship in Environment and Humanities at Princeton University. He is the author of Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor (Harvard University Press, 2011). His book in progress, ‘Environmental Martyrs and the Fate of the Forests,’ addresses the human and ecological costs of conflict in the great tropical forests of the global South.

Nonfiction-as-speculation feels oxymoronic. The two words tug against each other, ‘nonfiction’ leaning toward documentation, ‘speculation’ toward imagining. A strange hybrid genre results that strives to offset the bloodless abstraction of scientific projections and the future’s unreality.
