Bruce Gardiner

Indebted in equal measure to my teachers at Kingsgrove North High School, the University of Sydney, and Princeton University, I taught in the Department of English at the University of Sydney for forty years from 1981 to 2021, during which time my students and Faculty of Arts colleagues never failed to inspire me, proof against every recent managerial campaign to dispirit them. Though a specialist in later nineteenth and earlier twentieth century Anglophone literatures, I am essentially a generalist for whom any particular interest opens onto the human and natural world in its entirety. I am now writing a series of essays on poems from A. E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad in relation to Victorian literary and sexual culture.
