Graham Akhurst

Graham Akhurst is an Aboriginal writer hailing from the Kokomini of Northern Queensland. He is a Senior Lecturer of Indigenous Australian Studies and Creative Writing and Director of Indigenous Studies at the University of Technology Sydney. Graham is a contributing editor at Kweli Journal (NYC). He has been published in Kweli and J Journal for fiction and has been widely published in Australia and America for poetry and creative non-fiction. His debut YA novel, Borderland (2023), was published by the University of Western Australia Publishing and named a notable book in the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s book of the year awards, a finalist for the Aurealis Awards, a finalist for the Queensland Literary Awards, and a finalist for the New South Wales Literary Awards. Graham was the recipient of the W.G. Walker Fulbright Scholarship, the Nomad Two Worlds Foundation Indigenous Arts Scholarship, a Roberta Sykes Foundation Scholarship, a Ian Potter Foundation Scholarship, and a Australia Council of the Arts grant to support the completion of an MFA at Hunter College. He also has an Honours degree in creative writing and an MPhil in creative writing from the University of Queensland. He is currently a PhD student at University of Sydney and lives and works on Gadigal Country.
