Cathedral

Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - C

Street corners of Victoria Road and Marist Place in Parramatta, with a church and tall tower set further back.

A red light at the intersection of Victoria Road and Marist Place and the church begins to toll twelve times for midday.

I hope the lights stay red long enough so I can hear all twelve.

The tolling instantly brings back Montevideo. Wandering the Old Town or even in the middle of the night, I’d listen for the cathedral as a more poetic way to tell the time.

Bell tower of the Montevideo Catheral in Uruguay.
