Cloud Watching

Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - C

To watch clouds is to loosen the mind.

No matter how deep the mind imagines the sky, the sky is deeper still.

I watch clouds in four locations.

There’s an oval of grass between The Gatehouse and Old Government House. The clouds can be seen in 360 degrees.

Then there’s the bridge closest to the stadium. Choose the side over the river on the side of the kiosk and Parramatta Park.

The third place is at the top of the hill near the location of the pool. Walk towards the highway. Here the clouds appear against the backdrop of the skyline.

At the last point of the afternoon, stand in Parramatta Square and look west towards St John’s Church. The ground is silver and the buildings form a frame around the sky.

There are others but these I check regularly, photographing the same place across the seasons of the year.
