Mind Cities

Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - M

There are a few places I can walk in my mind.

There’s Sydney, specifically Parramatta, and then there’s Montevideo.

What do I remember about Montevideo when I’m far from it?

I remember catching the bus, topping up my bus card, going to the laundry, buying groceries at Tata and then the Fresh Market. I remember cafés such as Brasilero, Farmacia, Culto, and Idoneo. I remember the colour silver and watching a game on a Sunday morning, then those at Estadio Centenario in the evening.

Then there’s Tamworth. I can visualise the streets so easily.

Lastly, there’s my parents’ town in the north of Lebanon. To talk about the geography of Lebanon is to have Beirut as the centre and then the north and south.

Each time I refer to north and south in my stories, I am referencing Lebanon.

Each time there’s a mountain by the sea, that is Jabal Terboul by the Mediterranean Sea.

These are the places I can walk in my mind and I would like to connect them in a network of sister cities.
