Once Upon a Time
Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - O
When family members tell a story, rarely is a place named and rarely is the story pinned to a time.
Instead it is unhooked from the obvious markers but nonetheless there is enough detail that we have the context.
I was not conscious of this until 2024. Night after night around the fire, unwinding the tension until I could properly listen.
Perhaps this partly explains the styling of the stories that I write.
The other aspect is I prefer stories that allow for interpretation and sometimes this can be achieved by the sense of once upon a time.
