Shopping Day

Parramatta: A Dictionary of Place and Memory - S

My dad and I meet for coffee, and we end up in Westfield on level 5.

Walking into the centre, I am taken back to doing my HSC. Before my Modern History exam, we met at Nadia’s, and I had a cappuccino and croissant.

With that memory, I am also taken back to Ellen van Neerven’s Throat. Among the many brilliant poems, there are ones set in the local shopping centre where they grew up.

Sitting in the food court, I wonder about this place. Its greatest appeal today is that it’s easy to get to, and once there, it is easy-going, relaxed. And in summer, do not forget it’s also climate controlled.
